This is not my guide, it is written by Chantal.

Tired of seeing ninjas and casters who roll on healer items? ... Follow these guidelines and you'll be successful when it comes to looting.

A guide to Looting : How to do it, who/what to watch out for, and other useful tips.

Looting Parameters

There are many ways to distribute items while in a raid. All of them can be very good in different situations, and some can be very bad (i.e Master Loot, or even Need before Greed).

Free for All : This is basically "First come, first served". Anyone can loot anything they want. This is quite useful for looting mobs.

Master Loot : "ML" is notorious for meaning "Ninja". If the raid leader switches to ML when the boss is under 5-10% without having told anyone before, you can expect him to steal most, if not all of the items. However, this is very useful during guild raids. The raid leader, most of the time the Guild Master, will use ML to prevent mistakes, or to prevent any ninjaing, so that no one looses loot they needed unfairly.

Round Robin : This is very much like Free for All, but players take turns looting. Once a player has looted, he cannot loot again until everyone has looted.

Group Loot : Like Round-robin, except that there is a threshold set by the leader for which items must be rolled off. This is similar to Need before Greed.

Need before Greed : This is the most commonly used looting type. It is almost always used by PuGs. This is a rolling process : each player rolls for an item, and the one who rolls the highest number between 1 and 100 wins the item. There are three possibilities to NbG : Roll, Greed, Pass. Roll has been explained previously. Greed : Greed is pressed by those who want an item to sell, disenchant, etc. Greed rolling works like natural rolling, between 1 and 100 and the highest wins. However, a Greed roll will only count if no one has rolled on the item. On Ascent, I do not believe it works this way. From my knowledge, Greed is just as good as a normal Roll, so pressing Greed is the same as pressing Roll. Pass : Passing on an item simply means you don't want the item, so you don't roll for it. Need before Greed is the best way to attract ninjas, because anyone can roll for anything, so that's why people prefer guild raids to PuGs.

Looting/Raiding terminology

Ninja : Someone who will roll for items he/she doesn't need or can't use. Players may be called ninjas for rolling on a healer item when they're a caster, because they didn't know. Ninjas are generally hated by every player.

PuG : Pick up Group, the most used type of group in the game. It basically means inviting whoever will come to the raid using the LFG channel.

LFM : Looking for More, it means that a raid group is looking for more people. The one saying a group is LFM must say what instance it's going to and what faction, (A) or (H).

LFG : Looking for Group, it means that a player is looking for a raid group to a certain instance. The player will advertise in the LFG channel, saying which instance(s) he/she wishes to go to and which faction, (A) or (H).

Threat : Threat is a measure of an NPC's aggression towards a player. Each NPC has a threat table, and the character at the top of the list is usually the target of its aggression. In-game, this is known as having Aggro from that particular NPC. The NPC will attack that character if possible, unless another character manages to change the NPC's target.

Aggro : When the mob/boss is attacking a player, the player has Aggro.

How to loot

A player will always raid after getting his character to level 70, unless it's a twink. The player will choose a spec, and will roll on items accordingly. This is a problem for many groups. Here are 10 rules for looting/raiding...

1. You must respect every single player in the raid group. This will make the atmosphere more pleasant and will have you re-invited to other raids.

2. Do NOT ninja at any time.

3. Don't use any exploits, bugs or hacks when in a group. Players don't want to be banned for your stupidity.

4. Don't switch the loot to Master Loot without having told the group before starting that boss.

5. Don't spam, insult, use Caps Lock, etc.

6. Don't try to steal aggro.

7. Don't spam the LFG channel advertising for a raid. This is a pain in the ###### and won't get you many people.

8. Don't go AFK during a raid. People will need you at some point, so when you join a raid you must stay until the end.

9. Don't leave the raid before all bosses are cleared. This is unacceptable. Anyone hates a player who leaves after getting the item(s) that he/she wants.

10. Don't use any banned items or spells. This is just stupid and you will be banned for sure, because everyone will see it. This is #10 because it doesn't affect the raid group at all.

Looting items is a very simple thing to do. You simply have to roll for what you NEED. You must base what items you need on your talent build. A Resto Shaman can't roll on an Elemental Shaman's gear. You have to do research for your gear on various websites, like Allakhazam, Thottbot, WoWhead, etc. This may be the most important part of looting items.

Item Stats

Gives more healing than spell damage - a healer item
Gives equal amounts of spell damage and healing - a caster item (Mage, Warlock)
Gives Attack Power - A melee DPS item.
Is a plate/mail item that gives tanking stats (i.e Stamina, Defense rating, etc.) - a tanking item
Is a plate item that gives tanking stats and spell damage - a Paladin item

There are many exceptions for tanking items. A Paladin may wish to loot Tempest of Chaos or any such +spell damage item because Holy damage generates extra threat.
